Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, has warned of rising tensions and the risk of conflict in Afghanistan due to the lack of an inclusive government.
Speaking at the UN Security Council on Wednesday, he stressed that forming a representative and inclusive Afghan government is essential to prevent renewed war and crisis.
Iravani highlighted Iran’s long border with Afghanistan and the presence of millions of Afghan migrants in Iran, emphasizing that developments in Afghanistan have a direct and immediate impact on the Islamic Republic. He described meaningful and pragmatic engagement with the Taliban as a strategic necessity to manage risks and avoid future challenges.
The Iranian envoy also expressed serious concern about human rights, especially the rights of Afghan women and girls, urging the Taliban to immediately lift restrictions on education, employment, and participation. He reiterated that an inclusive government is vital for Afghanistan’s peace, stability, security, and economic improvement.
