Despite this move, international skepticism remains. US President Donald Trump recently designated Afghanistan as a major drug transit and producing country for 2026, noting that while poppy cultivation has dropped, methamphetamine production is on the rise .
Russian officials echoed these concerns, with Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu stating that drug trafficking remains a complex issue. He acknowledged a slowdown in some areas but warned of emerging threats and the continued involvement of some Taliban members in the trade .
