The Taliban Supreme Court announced that 19 individuals were publicly flogged in Balkh and Nangarhar provinces today. In Nangarhar alone, 14 men and two women received between 20 to 39 lashes for alleged crimes including “illicit relations” and running away from home.
The punishments were carried out in the presence of local officials and the public. Additionally, three other individuals were flogged recently for allegedly trafficking alcohol, continuing the group’s strict enforcement of judicial rulings.
Data indicates that since March, over 800 people have faced corporal punishment across Afghanistan. International human rights organizations continue to express deep concern over the lack of due process and the nature of these punishments.
