Khalid Hanafi, the Taliban Minister of Vice and Virtue, has explicitly claimed that a man’s beard is not part of his personal privacy. On Wednesday, January 21, the ministry’s spokesman released remarks where Hanafi justifies interfering with citizens’ appearance, arguing that enforcing Islamic Sharia takes precedence over personal choices.

Hanafi questioned the concept of “privacy” regarding beards and defended orders against wearing ties or Western suits. He stated that when agents instruct people on dress codes or hijab, their authority to enforce these rules should not be challenged by the public asking why such restrictions exist.

These comments follow a recent incident in Herat province where Taliban agents raided a university graduation ceremony and forcibly removed students’ ties. Citizens report that the group’s strict interpretation of Sharia has imposed severe restrictions on their personal freedoms and daily lives across Afghanistan.
