The national power utility, Breshna, has announced that heavy snowfall and severe storms between Pul-e-Khumri and Kabul have severed the imported 220kV power line from Uzbekistan. This technical failure has plunged the capital and surrounding regions into darkness during freezing winter conditions.
According to the statement, electricity has been cut off in Kabul, Parwan, Kapisa, Panjshir, Nangarhar, Laghman, Ghazni, Maidan Wardak, Logar, Paktia, and Khost provinces. Technical teams are currently on standby, waiting for the weather to clear before they can reach the site to begin repairs.
However, there is some relief for the north, as the utility company confirmed that the imported power line from Turkmenistan has been fixed, restoring electricity to Balkh, Faryab, Jawzjan, and Sar-e Pol. The heavy snow has also blocked major highways connecting Kabul to the north.
