UNICEF has raised an urgent alarm regarding the dire situation of children in eastern Afghanistan, where heavy snowfall is battering areas already devastated by recent earthquakes. On Friday, the organization reported that the harsh winter conditions are exacerbating the suffering of displaced families living in temporary shelters. The extreme weather is pushing an already vulnerable population to the brink.

Tajudeen Oyewale, UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan, expressed deep concern over “worrying images” emerging from the affected zones. Families are struggling to survive in sub-zero temperatures without adequate housing. Reports indicate that approximately 270,000 children are facing severe cold and life-threatening risks, with the need for emergency aid growing rapidly by the hour.

Aid agencies warn that the combination of earthquake aftermath and winter severity could trigger a massive humanitarian catastrophe if immediate support is not scaled up. While UNICEF continues to provide services, they emphasize that the needs are outpacing resources. Children remain the most exposed victims of this double tragedy of natural disaster and freezing climate.
