Taliban officials in Balkh province announced the construction of 30 new mosques under the tenure of Governor Mohammad Yusuf Wafa. Spokesman Ataullah Zaid stated that 20 mosques are fully completed, while 10 others are nearing completion and already open for prayer.
One prominent mosque at the Hairatan intersection has been named after the Taliban’s founder, Mullah Omar. Additionally, a large religious school (madrassa) is being constructed in the province with $6 million in funding provided by Uzbekistan.
The heavy investment in religious infrastructure contrasts sharply with the continued closure of schools and universities for women. While the Taliban prioritize mosques and madrassas, critics argue that essential public services and modern education are being neglected in favor of ideological projects.
