Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, issued a stark warning on the International Day of Education regarding Taliban policies. He emphasized that the ban on girls’ education affects not only their lives today but also devastates the country’s entire future.
Bennett stressed that all children and youth must always have access to quality education. His remarks come as the Taliban have kept secondary schools and universities closed to girls for over four years since returning to power in August 2021.
The Special Rapporteur noted that rather than relaxing these restrictions, the Taliban have intensified them over time. This ongoing suppression of rights continues to alarm the international community regarding the long-term prospects for Afghanistan’s development.
