The Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture has revoked the operating licenses of almost all media support organizations in Afghanistan, permitting only three to remain active.
The ministry claims that the banned groups were creating more problems than solutions and damaging the reputation of Afghan media internationally.
While officials did not name the three surviving entities, they stated the move aims to prevent the exploitation of journalists’ causes. This directive further constricts the already narrow space for press freedom and advocacy in the country.
The announcement was made on Monday, January 26, alleging that many of the dissolved groups were inactive.
This crackdown raises serious concerns about the future of independent media protection in Afghanistan .
