Microsoft has officially launched its next-gen in-house AI chip, Maia 200, announced in January 2026. Built on advanced 3-nanometer technology, the chip is designed to reduce reliance on Nvidia and control the soaring costs and supply constraints of AI computing.
Currently testing in Iowa and Arizona, Maia 200 focuses on AI inference to speed up chatbots and cloud services.
Microsoft is also countering Nvidia’s software dominance by promoting open-source tools like Triton, aiming to make its hardware a viable, cost-effective alternative for large-scale AI workloads.
