Hannah Neumann, a Member of the European Parliament, has strongly condemned the Taliban’s new penal code, describing it as the codification of “gender apartheid and de facto slavery” for Afghan women. She stated firmly that there can be no normalization of relations with a regime that enforces such oppressive statutes.

Analysis of the new laws reveals severe discrimination; for instance, women face harsher penalties than men for apostasy, including life imprisonment. Furthermore, the code trivializes domestic violence, stipulating only minor jail time for men who inflict severe physical injury on their wives, effectively stripping women of legal protection.

Despite warnings from human rights activists that these laws destroy justice and stratify society, the Taliban’s Ministry of Justice has doubled down. They have declared that any objection to these laws is considered a crime against Sharia, threatening critics with legal prosecution and punishment.
