Local sources in Takhar province report the massive deforestation of the “Kohna Khana” forest, alleging that authorities have distributed the timber to the public. Videos show thousands of people, some from neighboring Badakhshan, flocking to the 20,000-jerib area to collect wood after announcements were made via loudspeakers.
Residents fear severe environmental consequences and allege that the local administration plans to lease the cleared land to affiliates. This rapid clearing of ancient trees has raised alarms about corruption and long-term ecological damage to the region’s climate.
Contradicting these reports, the Taliban governor’s office in Takhar claims they intervened to stop illegal logging by “usurpers”. While the governor promised protection for the forest and punishment for offenders, local accounts suggest the destruction is already widespread and sanctioned by officials.
