Jam Kamal Khan, Pakistan’s Minister of Commerce, has stated that any engagement with the Taliban, including the resumption of bilateral trade, depends on concrete actions against militants in Afghanistan. He emphasized that while economic issues are important, Pakistan’s national security and sovereignty remain the top priority.
The minister highlighted a recent increase in militant attacks within Pakistan, alleging that safe havens exist across the border. He made it clear that Islamabad cannot continue to expand trade relations as long as terrorism issues remain unresolved and threats emanate from Afghan soil.
Trade relations have been strained for months, with key crossings like Torkham and Chaman frequently closed, leaving thousands of containers stranded. The Taliban administration has consistently denied allegations that Afghan territory is being used against neighbors, yet the economic deadlock continues to hurt traders on both sides.
