The Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) has denounced the Taliban’s decision to cease operations and confiscate the assets of Rah-e-Farda TV as a violation of free speech principles. The center urged the Taliban authorities to separate personal political statements from the operations of independent media outlets.
A spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture confirmed the shutdown was triggered by remarks from Mohammad Mohaqiq, the leader of the Islamic Unity Party. Mohaqiq recently described the ongoing conflict between the Taliban and Pakistan as a clash between regimes rather than a war involving the Afghan people.
This marks the second time the Taliban has halted the station’s broadcasting. Previously, operations were suspended over alleged non-payment of salaries. Mohaqiq, who founded the channel in 2006, has been living in exile since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.
