Today, Wednesday, March 18, is National Journalist Day in Afghanistan. This day comes as media support organizations say violations of journalists' and media rights in the country have intensified. National Journalist Day was approved on March 5, 2019, by the cabinet of the previous government led by Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.

In recent years, Afghan journalists and media have faced threats, restrictions, and widespread repression more than ever before. Sources say that after Pakistan's recent attacks, the Taliban government has multiplied pressure and censorship on domestic media.

According to the Afghan Journalists Center, censorship, threats, and violence against media increased by 13% in 2025 compared to the previous year. This organization reported 205 cases of violence and media rights violations in the country and said five journalists remain in Taliban prisons.
