Local sources report that the Taliban government prevented a large-scale public protest in Herat city. The demonstration was planned to take place during the funeral ceremony for the victims of a recent armed attack on Shia civilians, but authorities intervened.
Noor Ahmad Islamjar, the Taliban government governor in Herat province, summoned local scholars and elders, demanding they cancel their protest march. Residents had intended to hold a massive gathering against what they called the targeted killing of religious minorities, but faced strict opposition.
The governor had warned that security forces would not protect the protesters. The recent attack in Injil district claimed the lives of 13 civilians and sparked widespread reactions. To date, no group has claimed responsibility for the deadly incident.
