The Defense Secretary described the withdrawal as disastrous and stated that all aspects of the event, including the deaths of US service members, were investigated. He added that no integrated report of this magnitude had been prepared before.
Hegseth held the previous US administration responsible for the withdrawal, claiming it sent a message of weakness globally. During the Kabul evacuation operations, more than one hundred and seventy Afghan civilians also tragically lost their lives.
