Kyrgyzstan has officially announced the completion of its construction phase for the CASA-1000 regional power transmission project. With Tajikistan and Pakistan also finishing their respective infrastructure portions, the ultimate success and operation of this massive energy initiative now rely entirely on the completion of the Afghan segment.

Construction within Afghanistan was unexpectedly halted in August 2021 following the return of the Taliban government. Fortunately, after a lengthy delay and the securing of crucial security guarantees, the work successfully resumed in December 2024. The Afghan portion is considered the most vital link in this network.

The $1.2 billion CASA-1000 project aims to connect Central Asia to South Asia through a high-voltage power line, supplying excess summer electricity to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Full operational capacity is highly anticipated by the end of 2027 once the Afghan line is finalized.
