Dennis Kovel, an American researcher who spent fourteen months detained by the Taliban government, stated that his arrest was entirely politically motivated. Following his release last month, he emphasized that he was never formally charged with any crime during his prolonged and unexplained captivity in Afghanistan.
The 64-year-old researcher was detained by intelligence forces at his Kabul apartment in January of last year and moved to an undisclosed location. Kovel revealed that he was denied contact with his family for months, though he was finally allowed to speak with his elderly mother after nine months of isolation.
He was eventually freed and returned home in March 2026, following extensive diplomatic mediation by regional countries and international officials. Reports indicate that the Taliban government continues to hold at least two other American citizens in custody, ignoring ongoing international demands for their immediate and safe release.
