A targeted assassination wave against prominent religious clerics in restive areas of Pakistan has sparked severe security concerns. Well known religious figures have been murdered by unidentified armed individuals and extremist groups. These deadly attacks primarily occur near the border with Afghanistan, specifically targeting mosques and religious seminaries.
Mohammad Idris Tarangzai, a recognized cleric and former provincial representative, was assassinated by motorcycle riding attackers in the Charsadda district in early May. The Islamic State Khorasan Province claimed responsibility for this brutal attack, labeling him as an ally of the Pakistani government. This incident triggered widespread protests locally.
Many of the assassinated clerics were affiliated with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party, widely considered an ally of the military. Political observers believe the political stances of this religious faction have made its members prime targets for extremists.
