The Committee to Protect Journalists has strongly urged the European Commission to cancel its plans to invite a Taliban delegation to Brussels. The organization stated that such an invitation would legitimize a regime responsible for severe media suppression.
Tom Gibson, a CPJ representative, described the planned invitation as a complete embarrassment. He noted that while the Taliban continues to censor and attack the press in Afghanistan, welcoming them to Europe sends a terrible message to the international community.
The upcoming technical talks are reportedly focused on the deportation of rejected Afghan asylum seekers from European countries. The European Union has not officially recognized the Taliban, conditioning any formal engagement on strict adherence to human rights.
