The World Health Organization announced the identification of two new wild polio virus cases in Kunar and Helmand provinces. With these recent infections, the total number of polio cases in Afghanistan has risen to six so far this year.

Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only two countries globally where the wild polio virus has not been completely eradicated. Environmental surveillance reports also indicate that multiple positive samples of the virus continue to be detected in sewage systems.

The Taliban government's decision to restrict door-to-door vaccination campaigns and move them to mosques has significantly hindered eradication efforts. Health organizations warn that continuous and accessible vaccination programs are absolutely essential to prevent further outbreaks.
