The Deputy Secretary General and head of the United Nations Development Programme highlighted the critical crisis in Afghanistan during a visit to Nangarhar province. He emphasized that three quarters of the population can no longer secure their basic living necessities.
Alexander De Croo noted that while emergency aid saves lives, sustainable development programs are essential to restore a brighter future for the people. Visiting earthquake affected villages, he witnessed firsthand the positive impact of rebuilding efforts and restored vital services.
Climate change remains another massive challenge that the Afghan population experiences directly on a daily basis. Flood protection and irrigation projects have successfully helped mitigate natural disaster risks while creating valuable income opportunities for local residents.
