Local sources in Badakhshan province reported that on Thursday evening, the home of Fasihuddin Fitrat, the Taliban's Army Chief of Staff, in Warduj district was targeted in an armed attack. Unknown gunmen fired light and heavy weapons from a hill overlooking his residence.
Guards at the house returned fire and a brief exchange of gunfire took place. The attackers fled the scene after the skirmish. No reports of casualties or damage have been confirmed so far, and no group has claimed responsibility.
The attack comes as Badakhshan has witnessed escalating attacks by Taliban opponents in recent days. Fitrat had traveled to Badakhshan to oversee military operations against opposition forces following recent unrest in the province.
