The Islamic Republic of Iran executed Qaem Hosseini, a 20-year-old Afghan national, on Thursday, August 20, on charges of participating in protests in Isfahan in January 2026. The execution sparked widespread condemnation from human rights organizations, opposition figures, and social media users.

Mahmoud Amiri-Moghaddam, director of Iran Human Rights, called it a clear example of collective punishment and said at least 30 protesters have been executed in Iran since mid-March 2026. Hosseini was the cousin of Gol Mohammad Mohammadi, another Afghan national executed last month under similar charges.

The Taliban government has so far made no statement on the execution of Afghan nationals in Iran. Iran Human Rights Center called the execution a crime against humanity and urged the international community to immediately act to stop the rising wave of executions.
