Reports from Helmand province reveal that two girls, aged six and eight, were forced into marriage with men aged 60 and 80 respectively. The incidents have once again drawn global attention to the alarming rise of child marriage in Afghanistan since the Taliban's return to power.
Taliban media officials in Helmand stated that in Nad Ali district, an eight-year-old girl had been given in marriage to an 80-year-old man by her family. They claimed that the local vice and virtue department intervened and prevented the marriage from continuing.
In a separate case, a six-year-old girl in Garmsir district was married off for 200,000 Pakistani rupees to a 60-year-old man by her drug-addicted father. Taliban authorities said that after reviewing both cases, the court annulled the marriages.
