Shakib Ahmad Nazari, an Afghan journalist who collaborated with Japan's NTV television network, has been released after spending one year and two months in Taliban detention. His family confirmed the news to media outlets.
Nazari was arrested on July 24, 2025, in Kabul by Taliban intelligence and the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice. He was charged with working with foreign media and "propaganda against the system," and a Taliban military court later sentenced him to three years in prison.
He spent eight months at Taliban intelligence headquarters before being transferred to Bagram Prison in March 2026. His release is being welcomed as significant news for Afghanistan's journalism community.
