Afghanistan holds vast mineral reserves including copper, iron, gold, lapis lazuli, emeralds, and other precious stones. Five years after the Taliban returned to power, these resources have become central to the group's economic agenda, with new mining contracts signed, particularly with Chinese companies.

An estimate raised by some US officials about a decade ago valued Afghanistan's mineral reserves at nearly one trillion dollars. Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi recently told the Financial Times that Afghanistan welcomes US investment in mining, infrastructure, and agriculture, though he stopped short of saying this proposal was formally presented to the White House.

However, serious questions remain about contract transparency, actual company ownership, the government's revenue share, local community benefits, and competition among power networks. Critics warn that without clear answers, this enormous wealth may never reach ordinary Afghans.
