Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said that 31,498 beggars were collected from Afghan cities in the past lunar year. He made the remarks during a press conference on 2 September about the group’s achievements.

The Taliban administration formed a commission on the orders of Hibatullah Akhundzada to prevent begging by identifying, detaining, and interrogating beggars across Afghanistan. International reports indicate that poverty and hunger have sharply increased since the Taliban takeover.

The World Food Programme warned that over 17 million Afghans face severe food insecurity ahead of winter, while 23 million need humanitarian aid. Experts say lack of employment under Taliban rule has forced many into begging.
