The UN Trust Fund for Afghanistan announced that Norway has contributed about $2.6 million to the fund. The fund welcomed the new contribution, saying Norway's continued support helps UN agencies provide more services to the people of Afghanistan, according to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund.
Official figures from the fund show that Norway's total contributions to Afghanistan have now surpassed $49.3 million. Norway ranks as the third largest donor to the UN's special fund for Afghanistan, after Sweden and Germany.
Since 2021, a total of 16 donors have contributed more than $277 million to the fund. These contributions form part of the international community's broader effort to address humanitarian needs across Afghanistan.
The Norwegian government has stressed that its aid does not go directly to the Taliban government, but instead reaches the Afghan people through multilateral institutions and non-governmental organizations. This approach aligns with the general policy of Western countries toward humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan.
Norway has also made equal access for women and girls to services a condition for its continued support of aid programs in Afghanistan, reflecting global concern over Taliban restrictions on Afghan women.
The United Nations has requested $1.7 billion this year to assist 17.5 million vulnerable and needy people in Afghanistan, but so far only slightly more than 30 percent of that amount has been secured.
