The Coordination Council of Afghanistan's Political and Consular Missions has strongly condemned recent Pakistani airstrikes on areas in Helmand and Kunar provinces. In a statement released on Friday, October 1, the council described the attacks as a blatant violation of Afghanistan's national sovereignty and international humanitarian law.
"This council explicitly considers these attacks a flagrant violation of Afghanistan's sovereignty and international humanitarian law," the statement read. The diplomatic missions called on the United Nations and the international community to take necessary and immediate action to protect civilians, especially women and children.
The airstrikes were carried out by Pakistan on the morning of Thursday, September 30. According to a report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), at least 10 civilians were killed in the attacks, the majority of whom were children. UNAMA also confirmed that nine other people were injured.
However, Pakistan has made conflicting claims. Pakistani officials stated that their strikes targeted "terrorist" hideouts and ammunition depots, resulting in the deaths of "22 terrorists." This claim regarding casualties contradicts the United Nations' report.
In their statement, the diplomatic council also emphasized that the people of Afghanistan, after decades of war and conflict, deserve "freedom, peace, security, dignity, and a future shaped by their own will."
These attacks have once again heightened tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan and raised serious concerns about the safety of civilians in the border regions.
