The National Resistance Front of Afghanistan (NRF) has claimed that it killed the Taliban's deputy intelligence chief for Badakhshan province, along with two of his guards, in a targeted attack in Faizabad city. The front also asserted that no civilians were harmed in the attack.
In a press release, the NRF announced that this "targeted operation" was carried out around 9:30 AM on Sunday, October 4, in the 6th district of Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan province.
The front's statement did not provide further details on how the attack was conducted. The claim was made hours after reports emerged of an explosion in Faizabad city.
Taliban government officials have not yet officially commented on the incident or the NRF's claim, and the assertion has not been independently verified.
Concurrently, the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K) also claimed responsibility for an attack on a Taliban intelligence official in Faizabad on the same day, alleging that one guard was killed and the official himself and another guard were injured. It is unclear whether the two anti-Taliban groups are claiming responsibility for a single event or if two separate attacks occurred.
These claims arise as social media users close to the Taliban alleged the previous night that their forces had killed an NRF commander named "Shah Mohammad" in the center of Badakhshan. The NRF has not yet responded to this Taliban claim.
Badakhshan, in northeastern Afghanistan, is one of the provinces where the National Resistance Front and other anti-Taliban groups have a presence and are active, with reports of clashes and attacks emerging from the province periodically.
