United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, on Tuesday morning for a two-day official visit. The trip comes at the invitation of Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar.
Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that Mr. Guterres will be in the country from October 6 to 8. The visit provides an opportunity for discussions on key regional and international issues, as well as strengthening the long-standing cooperation between Pakistan and the United Nations.
According to the announced schedule, the Secretary-General will meet with senior Pakistani officials, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. He is also scheduled to hold a meeting with Field Marshal Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff.
Mr. Guterres's itinerary also includes a visit to the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). Additionally, he will receive a iefing at the National Disaster Management Authority headquarters on disaster preparedness and early warning systems.
The Foreign Ministry noted that the visit will highlight Islamabad's efforts to strengthen multilateralism, promote international peace and security, and showcase the country's actions on disaster preparedness. These topics are particularly significant given Pakistan's vulnerability to climate change.
This is António Guterres's second visit to Pakistan as UN Secretary-General; his first was in Feuary 2020. The current visit takes place as his 10-year term as the head of the UN is set to conclude on December 31, 2026.
