According to new figures from Turkey's Directorate of Migration Management, Turkish police have detained 29,712 Afghan asylum seekers in the first nine months of the current calendar year. The data shows that Afghans top the list of detained asylum seekers in the country.

The Directorate of Migration Management announced in its report that a total of nearly 110,000 undocumented asylum seekers from various countries were detained across Turkey during this period. These individuals were arrested for not having valid residency documents.

Following Afghans, citizens from Syria, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Morocco, Iraq, Egypt, Sudan, and Yemen constituted the largest numbers of those detained. This data highlights the increasing pressure on migrants and refugees in Turkey.

The Turkish migration authority did not provide details about the fate of those detained or the exact number of individuals who have been deported. However, human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over the forced deportation of Afghan asylum seekers from Turkey.

The report also noted that during the first nine months of the year, 10,135 individuals were arrested on charges of human smuggling. This indicates the extensive activity of human trafficking networks on migration routes to Turkey.

Turkish police and coast guard forces continuously carry out operations to detain asylum seekers, who are predominantly Afghan citizens. Many of these individuals face the risk of deportation to Afghanistan after being detained.
