The Taliban's acting Minister of Interior, Sirajuddin Haqqani, has met with the European Union's Chargé d'Affaires in Afghanistan, Nicola Bellomo, to discuss the expansion of bilateral cooperation.

The Taliban-controlled Bakhtar News Agency reported on Thursday, October 8, that the two officials discussed the continuation of bilateral relations, expanding cooperation, and the fight against narcotics. The meeting took place in Kabul.

Other topics included Afghanistan's security situation and the expansion of engagement between the Taliban and the EU based on common and positive issues. The European Union remains a major humanitarian donor to Afghanistan but does not formally recognize the Taliban government.

According to the report, Haqqani welcomed the start of Nicola Bellomo's mission in Afghanistan and described the relationship between the Taliban and the EU as "positive." He emphasized the Taliban's desire for engagement with the international community.

This meeting occurs while Sirajuddin Haqqani himself remains on UN and US blacklists, a major obstacle to formal international engagement with the Taliban.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides emphasized the need to maintain engagement and continue cooperation. Continued dialogue could help improve the humanitarian situation and foster stability in Afghanistan.
