Former US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized the Nobel Peace Prize Committee for not awarding the prize to him. Citing his success in "stopping more than eight wars," Trump described the decision as "shameful" and a "stain" on Norway's credibility.

These comments came after the Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday named Navanethem (Navi) Pillay, a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and a former judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC), as the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The award was given to Ms. Pillay for her efforts in "promoting peace and international law."

Notably, just hours after the announcement that a former ICC judge had won the peace prize, the Trump administration declared it was imposing sanctions on the ICC. This timing has fueled speculation about the motives behind the sanctions.

The Trump administration has long been at odds with the International Criminal Court. Washington has been particularly critical of the court's investigation into the actions of US military personnel in Afghanistan and its potential issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli officials. The administration had previously sanctioned several of the court's judges and prosecutors.

During his presidency, Trump had repeatedly suggested he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, especially for his role in mediating the normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab nations, known as the Aaham Accords.

In contrast, Trump's critics point to his aggressive foreign policy, his withdrawal from key international agreements like the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris Climate Accord, and his undermining of international institutions. They argue that his actions were contrary to the spirit of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The 85-year-old laureate, Navanethem Pillay, is a South African-born jurist who has dedicated decades to fighting discrimination and defending human rights.
