Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has alleged that police conducted raids on the homes of its party members in various areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province early on Monday morning. The move comes amid escalating political tensions between the party and Pakistan's central government.
PTI claimed in a statement that the true purpose of removing the democratically elected government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and imposing a state of emergency is not to combat terrorism, but to crush Imran Khan's party. The central government has denied these allegations.
Led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, PTI accuses the central government of attempting to dismantle its power base in the key province. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has traditionally been a major stronghold for the PTI party.
In a related development, a large number of students from the University of Peshawar held a protest last night, condemning the declaration of a state of emergency. The demonstrators chanted slogans against the governor's rule, which was imposed by the central government, and demanded the restoration of their elected government.
The crisis escalated after the federal government dismissed the PTI-led provincial government and declared an emergency, citing a deteriorating security situation. However, PTI has labeled the action a political "coup."
Political analysts express concern that the deepening political crisis could lead to further instability in the province, which is already facing significant security and economic challenges.
