The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Afghanistan has announced efforts to protect homes, agricultural land, and livelihoods in Baghlan province from natural disasters, coinciding with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The organization posted on its X page on Tuesday, October 13, that following the devastating floods of 2024 in Baghlan, it is creating flood-protection infrastructure through its "PAIDAAR" project.

According to the announcement, the project is being implemented with financial support from the Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan. Its primary goal is to reduce the risk of flooding and protect local communities from its destructive impacts.

The project involves constructing retaining walls and other engineering installations to better manage water flow during heavy rainfall and prevent the destruction of homes and agricultural lands.

In May 2024, Baghlan province experienced sudden and deadly flash floods that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people and the displacement of thousands of families. The floods caused extensive damage to infrastructure, homes, and farmland.

On the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the UNDP emphasized that disaster preparedness and the creation of protective infrastructure play a crucial role in increasing community resilience and reducing the damage from future natural disasters. The organization reiterated its commitment to working with local communities to build a safer future.
