Residents in Herat city report that house rents have soared to unprecedented levels, making it impossible for many families to afford housing. This situation has created significant hardship for inhabitants, particularly those with low incomes.

According to Amu TV, Herat residents have expressed deep concern over the situation, stating that finding an affordable rental home on their current incomes has become nearly impossible. They are calling on the Taliban government to intervene and control the prices to prevent further increases.

A local real estate agent in Herat attributed the primary cause of the rent surge to the massive influx of Afghan returnees from neighboring countries and internally displaced persons (IDPs). In recent months, following the forced deportation of Afghan refugees from Pakistan, Herat province has seen the arrival of thousands of families.

This sudden population boom has dramatically increased the demand for housing, while the supply has remained static. The imbalance between supply and demand has allowed landlords to raise rents at will, leaving many renters in a precarious position.

Many of the returning and displaced families have arrived in major cities like Herat with limited financial resources and little to no support. They face immense challenges in finding shelter and are often forced to live in substandard conditions at exorbitant costs.

Economic experts warn that without immediate action to manage this crisis, social and economic problems in Afghanistan's major cities, including Herat, will worsen. They suggest that responsible authorities must implement housing support programs for vulnerable populations and enact policies to regulate rental prices.
