Today, October 20, is World Statistics Day. This day is observed globally to highlight the critical importance of statistics and their role in effective economic and social decision-making and planning.

World Statistics Day was first celeated on October 20, 2010, at the initiative of the United Nations Statistical Commission. Since then, it has become an opportunity for governments, international organizations, and civil society to emphasize the importance of accurate, reliable, and timely data.

This year's theme focuses on "Connecting the world with data we can trust." This slogan highlights the importance of building strong and independent statistical systems that can provide the foundation for evidence-based policymaking.

In Afghanistan, collecting accurate statistics faces numerous challenges. Decades of war, political instability, and economic problems have made it difficult to establish a comprehensive national statistical system. The National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA) is responsible for this task but faces significant limitations.

The lack of reliable data negatively impacts all aspects of life in Afghanistan, from the distribution of humanitarian aid to long-term development planning. Without precise statistics on population, poverty, health, and education, the government and international agencies cannot properly identify and address the real needs of the people.

Experts stress that investing in a country's statistical capacity is an investment in a better future. Accurate data allows governments to allocate resources effectively, measure progress, and be accountable to their citizens. World Statistics Day serves as a reminder that to build a prosperous and just society, we need facts and figures.
