UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern about the high level of hunger worldwide, stating that despite decades of progress, the international food system still faces serious challenges.

On Monday, October 19, Mr. Guterres wrote on his X page that global hunger levels are "still unacceptably high." He stressed that access to food is a human right and called on countries to take practical steps to ensure healthy and sufficient food for all.

These remarks come as the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is deeply worrying. According to a recent UN report released on October 15, food security in Afghanistan has reached its worst state, with millions grappling with acute hunger.

The report specifies that 15.9 million people in Afghanistan are currently facing severe food shortages. This figure represents the highest level of hunger ever recorded in the country, highlighting the depth of the humanitarian crisis Afghanistan is facing.

Several factors have contributed to this crisis, including the economic collapse following the Taliban's return to power, consecutive droughts, international sanctions, and restrictions on the activities of aid organizations.

The UN Secretary-General added in his message: "Let's turn our collective commitments into practical actions and ensure sustainable, healthy, and just food systems for all." This call once again draws the international community's attention to the urgent need to address the hunger crisis in Afghanistan and other parts of the world.
