Fazel Mahmood Fazly, the former head of the Administrative Office of the President of Afghanistan, says that Pakistan is sacrificing its own economy for foreign and geopolitical objectives by closing trade routes with its neighbors.
Mr. Fazly made these remarks in reaction to Pakistan's recent closure of trade routes with Iran, which followed restrictions on the borders with Afghanistan and India. He called on Pakistan's elite, media, and business community to question their government about the real reasons behind these decisions.
According to Fazly, these actions have "no domestic or national logic" and are merely "submission and obedience to foreign powers and geopolitical demands." He believes these decisions are causing serious harm to Pakistan's economy and its people.
The former official added that Pakistan's current establishment, from Iran to Afghanistan, India, and Gwadar, is trampling its own economy to serve the interests of its foreign patrons and imperial goals. He described these actions as a form of "economic self-immolation."
Fazly emphasized that with these decisions, the Pakistani government is subjecting its own people and hardworking traders to severe financial and economic punishments. He posed the question: who benefits from this "economic self-immolation" by Pakistan, and why must innocent people pay the price?
These comments come as Pakistan's frequent closure of border crossings, especially on the border with Afghanistan, has consistently created serious problems for Afghan traders and the economy.
