The Taliban's security command in Nimroz province says its forces have prevented more than 330 people from illegally traveling to Iran. Gul Mohammad Qudrat, a spokesman for the command, said on Tuesday, November 3, that the individuals were detained in two separate operations.

According to Qudrat, in the first operation, more than 300 people were arrested at a smugglers' "hideout" in the third security district of Zaranj, the provincial capital. One person was arrested on charges of human trafficking, and ten different vehicles were seized.

In another operation, 30 people who were attempting to travel illegally to Iran via the Delaram-Zaranj highway were detained. The spokesman added that another person was arrested in connection with organizing this illegal journey, and a truck used to transport the individuals was confiscated.

This is the latest in a series of announcements by Taliban officials in Nimroz in recent months regarding the arrest of hundreds of citizens attempting to cross illegally into Iran. Nimroz province is a primary route for irregular migration from Afghanistan to Iran, and from there to Turkey and Europe.

Widespread poverty, rising unemployment, and a sense of hopelessness about the future in Afghanistan are the main drivers compelling many citizens to leave the country. Furthermore, the suspension of Iranian visa processing in Afghanistan has led many to resort to dangerous smuggling routes to find work and support their families.

These journeys are often fraught with life-threatening dangers, and migrants frequently face abuse from smugglers and border forces in neighboring countries. Despite the Taliban government's efforts to curb illegal migration, the ongoing economic and social crisis continues to push a large number of Afghans to leave their homeland.
