Donald Trump, President of the United States, signed a bill to fund the government on Wednesday evening, November 12, ending the 43-day shutdown.

The bill had previously been approved by the Senate with sixty votes in favor versus forty against, and by the House of Representatives with 222 votes in favor versus 209 against.

Trump’s signature ended the second government shutdown during his presidency, which had intensified partisan divisions in Washington.

This shutdown forced more than 1.4 million federal employees to either go on unpaid leave or work without receiving salaries.

Republicans said Democrats deliberately used the suffering caused by the shutdown to advance their own agenda.

This budget agreement funds the government until January 30 and halts Trump’s plan to reduce the federal workforce.

The shutdown had disrupted food assistance for millions and caused widespread disruption in civilian aviation.
