A new study led by Curtin University reveals that playing video games for more than 10 hours a week can significantly harm a young person’s physical health.
Researchers surveyed university students and found a stark decline in well-being once gaming habits exceeded this specific time threshold.
The findings showed that “high gamers” suffered from poorer diet quality and disrupted sleep patterns compared to those who played less.
Notably, this group had a higher body mass index (BMI), placing them at greater risk of obesity, while moderate gamers maintained health metrics similar to non-gamers.
Professor Mario Siervo emphasized that gaming itself isn’t the enemy, but excessive screen time crowds out healthy habits like exercise and proper eating.
The study suggests that building healthier routines now, such as taking breaks and avoiding late-night snacking, is crucial for long-term health in adulthood.
