The US Department of Homeland Security has confirmed the detention of Mirza Mohammad Katawazai, former deputy of the Afghan parliament. He was apprehended by Customs and Border Protection officers upon arriving at Dulles International Airport near Washington D.C. on May 27, 2026.
According to an official statement, Katawazai was deemed removable under US immigration and nationality laws after further inspection. He has been issued a notice to appear in an immigration court and will remain in federal custody while his legal proceedings continue.
Sources indicate that Katawazai had previously traveled to the US without issue. After the fall of the previous government, he stayed in Kabul to manage his business ventures under the Taliban government, drawing public criticism.
