Three Taliban intelligence officials in Nuristan province were detained by local residents on charges of attempting to sexually assault young girls. The suspects — Sohail Ahmad, Qari Hamdard, and Qari Asrar — all hold senior positions within Taliban intelligence in the province.
Sources say the three men had attempted a similar assault about a week earlier near a river, where girls were washing clothes. Taliban local authorities had claimed the men were simply fishing and that a dispute arose over a fishing ban.
At a village council meeting, the detainees admitted to the charges and offered to pay a fine of up to 10 cows. The village council has demanded formal punishment, but the Taliban has yet to issue any official response.
