(Washington D.C.) – With the new academic year in Afghanistan approaching, the U.S. has renewed its call on the Taliban to reverse their ban on girls’ education. Millions of women and girls are currently denied their right to attend school beyond the third grade.Despite ongoing engagement efforts by the U.S. and the United Nations, the Taliban has shown no sign of changing their policy. This raises concerns about the future of girls’ education in Afghanistan.Responding to a question about the issue, U.S. State Department Spokesperson Ned Price reiterated the U.S. position: “We have made it clear that girls should never have been blocked from going to school in the first place.”He added that the U.S. remains committed to advancing the rights of Afghan women and girls. The U.S. urges the Taliban to “allow girls to return to school, respect the rights of all Afghans, and reverse their discriminatory decrees on women and girls.”
