International human rights organization Amnesty International has announced the release of Saadiqullah Afghan, an education rights activist, from Taliban captivity tonight.

In a statement released tonight, Amnesty International described Afghan’s release as a “positive development,” but noted that he should not have been detained in the first place.

Amnesty International has reiterated its call for the immediate and unconditional release of other education rights activist Ahmad Fahim Azimi and others who have been arbitrarily detained and imprisoned for speaking out on education and human rights issues.

The Taliban have detained and imprisoned individuals including human rights, education, and cultural activists since their reemergence in Afghanistan.

While the details of Saadiqullah Afghan’s release are unclear, recently a journalist and a female protester were released based on a Taliban leader’s amnesty decree for Eid al-Fitr.
