A group of Afghan human rights activists and civil society members have sent an open letter to the UN Secretary-General, urging immediate attention to the human rights situation in the country. The letter expresses deep concern over the systematic violation of Afghan citizens’ rights by the Taliban group.

The activists point to numerous cases of arbitrary detentions, abductions, and forced disappearances. They specifically highlight the situation of Javid Kohistani, a political and military analyst who was kidnapped by the Taliban without any specified charges. Kohistani’s family is unaware of his whereabouts, and he has no access to legal representation.

The letter also addresses widespread restrictions on freedom of expression, political participation, and peaceful assembly, emphasizing that women and girls have been disproportionately affected by these limitations.

The activists call on the UN and UNAMA to take urgent action for Kohistani’s release, as he requires heart surgery and currently has no access to medication or doctors. They also demand increased monitoring of the human rights situation in Afghanistan and the implementation of stronger sanctions against human rights violators.
